Mr. Siegel

Hello!  My name is Ted Siegel and I teach social studies at Ridgefield Memorial High School.  Let me take this opportunity to give you some information regarding my class and my beliefs about education.

When I was in high school, I often found myself frustrated by the lack of connection between what I learned in social studies and what I thought of as “real life.”  I wished the teacher would simply ditch the curriculum and focus on current events.  While I realize now that a lot of my frustration was misguided, I do believe that the relevance of the material taught in my class should always be clear.  That is, I hope that students consistently walk out of my class with an understanding of the importance of the material.  The who, what, where, and when are important, but never as important as the WHY.

While I love history and enjoy discussing it in class, in truth my social studies classroom is less about names, dates, places, etc. and more about critical thinking skills.  My highest goal is that every student will leave my class a better reader, a better writer, and an overall more curious person.  As a result, expect to do a lot of writing and a lot of reading in my class.  In truth, my greatest wish is that students walk out of my classroom inspired to research things they find interesting for themselves.

My own personal educational philosophy places great emphasis on student-centered learning.  Effective teaching requires sustained and invested participation from the student body as a whole.  I believe lecturing is a necessity, but lessons that incorporate inquiry-based and exploratory learning should be utilized wherever possible.  The classroom is a community of equals with a vested interest in promoting a unified and healthy learning environment.

If your child has difficulty in my class at any time, I am available to assist him/her before and after school as needed.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for visiting my website!

Sincerely,
T. Siegel
