Mrs. Ylenia Fuccilli

My journey as a teacher began in 2000 at Our Lady of Grace School in Fairview, NJ where I met an impressionable group of kindergartners. Those youngsters are now adults, and I often wonder about the paths they've chosen in life. Soon after in 2001, I was fortunate enough to obtain a 6th-grade teaching position here at Slocum Skewes. I was raised in Ridgefield and educated by some of the finest teachers at both Slocum and RMHS. I was hired by my beloved childhood principal, Larry Dunn, who will always hold a very special place in my heart. After teaching 6th grade for three years, he encouraged me to develop a reading course for 7th-grade students that would give them the necessary strategies to help them self-monitor. Larry Dunn was the kind of principal who we could find outside at recess playing basketball with the students, and that I'll never forget. He taught me many valuable lessons that I hope my students will learn from me.

The fond memories I have of attending Slocum Skewes and RMHS have been kept alive by many of my colleagues. Over the past 22 years, I have been lucky enough to work alongside my favorite childhood teachers who have inspired me in many ways. I strive to instill some of my own educational beliefs in my students every year.

Students of all ages require more than academic instruction in the classroom. As a teacher, I have grown to understand that a career in education is a commitment to the individual needs of my students. It is the daily challenge and extraordinary reward that we, as educators, are privileged to experience. My journey through various grade levels and classrooms has allowed me to further explore my educational philosophy:

  • To encourage students to think critically and thoughtfully about ideas
  • To help students feel confident about their ideas and to respect one another’s ideas
  • To show students the importance of embracing diversity
  • To instill in my students a feeling of empathy for others in school and in society
  • To motivate students to want to put forth their personal best
  • To promote lifelong learning
