BERGEN BOULEVARD DEBUTS SENSORY ROOM
In order to help our students, remain in an “Optimal State of Learning,” the Sensory Room was established at Bergen Boulevard School. It is available to all children who are experiencing difficulty modulating their behavior due to an over-responsiveness to their environment. It is not designed for a child who needs increased sensory input such as running, jumping, spinning etc.
Children are evaluated by a physical, occupational therapist and/or behaviorist who have determined that a child’s difficulty may be helped by using this area. Children with sensory processing disorders need strategies to help them cope with their challenges so that they can learn and reach their maximum potential. This sensory room offers a more controlled environment with many different materials to help them self -regulate. It gives the child the opportunity to “re-set” so they can return to class calmer and more focused.
A special thank you to Mrs. Diane Tannenbaum, Physical Therapist, Mr. James Malaquias, Head of Maintenance, and Mrs. Patricia Drimones Director of Special Education for helping get the room prepared, sensory materials ordered and staff trained.
